Interested in teaching english as a second language in the states and overseas...need a program that would provide a certificate in TEFL/TESOL that would be recognizable in the states.

Although there may be some decent courses out there, I'd highly recommend you do a full time month long course. A lot of places which want qualified teachers require that their certificate contained a practical element, with a certain number of teaching hours (about 40 I think). If you're not in a position to make that sort of commitment at the moment, why don't you try teaching in a country that doesn't require you to have a qualification, like Japan or South Korea, so you can find out if it's for you. no, there aren't. you need to take either the Cambridge CELTA or the Trinity equivalent. online certs are a not considered reputable b/c you won't get any teacher time with feedback.

I agree with the above. DON'T do an online course - it's a waste of time / money! You need to take a recognised qualification, so either: Trinity TESOL or Cambridge CELTA. If not, you just get laughed at and will have a hard time getting a job.
