There are ESL markets that accept non-BA teachers based on the value of the candidate being a native English speaker. Primarily we have found that the regions most open to non-BA candidates are: China, Taiwan and Latin America.
While China tends to be the most open to non-BA English teachers, in recent years they have begun tightening their requirements for granting working visas for these positions, particularly in the larger city centers. Positions for English teachers in the smaller city centers are less scrutinized and therefore easier to obtain. Regulations for obtaining work visas vary within Latin America, however, there are still several countries open to non-BA candidates. Taiwan seems to judge each candidate on a case by case basis, but generally requires an Associates degree or partial completion of a BA in a related discipline. Teaching experience, including informal volunteer teaching, is always an asset.
Generally speaking, applying in person is in a candidate's best interest! Schools are then able to judge your level of competence in person. It would be valuable to have one or two lessons ready as a demonstration for schools who would like to see your effectiveness in the classroom.
