Charl targets more Joburg glory
Another win in Johannesburg this week will see Charl Schwartzel join an elite list of European Tour repeat winners.
The South African is eyeing a third consecutive Joburg Open win at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington this week, after winning by six shots in 2010 and by four shots last year on a course he has played Nike - VR Pro Blade Irons on since his amateur days and knows exceedingly well.
Should the current Masters champion complete the hat-trick he would become one of only six players, alongside Ian Woosnam, Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie, Ernie Els and Tiger Woods, to win the same European Tour event three years in a row.
"It is a **** course I've played with
Nike - VR Pro Blade Irons many times as an amateur and junior and I grew up not too far away from Royal Johannesburg so it is always nice to play the course," Schwartzel told europeantour.com.
"I've always got a good feel when I go back there and always enjoy playing the Joburg Open with
Nike - VR Pro Blade Irons.
"I get to play a tournament and stay at home in my own bed, which is very cool.
"It is great for South Africa to have three European Tour events at the start of the year too."
His stiffest challenge will most likely come from fellow South African Retief Goosen, who is fresh off a third place finish at the Africa Open last week - though George Coetzee, Tjaart van der Walt and Richard Sterne are sure to have a say in proceedings as well.
