Post Cobra Men's AMP Driver Preview
The Cobra Men's AMP Driver delivers customised distance and accuracy thanks to Cobra's AMP Speed Tuning and E9 Face Technology with dual roll.
With its black PVD face and orange club, shaft and grip detail, the Cobra Men's AMP Driver is designed to bring colour and attitude to the course. Tom Preece, Cobra's VP of Research and Development describes the AMP driver as being "focused on delivering superior distance and accuracy. The titanium 6-4 head with a semi-forged, milled Ti face features E9 Face Technology with dual roll to provide more distance to shots above and below the centerline.”
In addition the E9 Technology, the Cobra Men's AMP Driverfeatures Adjustable Flight Technology and Cobra's AMP Speed Tuning. The AFT or Adjustable Flight Technology allows golfers to pick from three simple face-angle settings (Open, Neutral and Closed) designed to optimise distance and improve accuracy. The AMP Speed Tuning works in conjunction with the Aldila RIP Speed Tuned shaft to optimise each loft to specifically deliver the best performance for a given club head speed.
The Cobra Men's AMP Driver is also available in an offset design that is specifically designed to reduce the effects of a slice. The offset design squares the clubhead quicker through impact, improving accuracy for golfers that struggle with a slice.
The Cobra Men's AMP Driver certainly stands out from the crowd with very bold silver, black and orange graphics but we think it works. The 460cc head is a bit longer front to back than the S3 driver and combined with the lighter silver head colour, it seems a little bigger and less round too. Combined with the black face it makes it very easy to line up. The excellent Aldila RIP shaft comes in a two tone black/silver finish with a great feeling Lamkin REL 3Gen grip in the new Cobra corporate colour of orange.
On the course we really liked the Cobra Men's AMP Driver. The sound was good and a little more muted than the S3. The feel was soft but solid and it was easy to shape the ball both ways from a face that was very forgiving.
The Cobra Men's AMP Driver comes with Cobra's AFT adjustable flight technolocy that enables you to choose one of 3 settings to have the face angle set at open, closed or neutral. To us, the neutral setting seemed a little closed, hence the slightly higher ball flight and the closed setting is really closed, so this could be good if you have a bad slice. However as with most of the AMP range, put the club in the open setting and it seemed to sit a little squarer and the performance and flight is a lot better for mid to low handicaps.
Cobra have continued the styling with a sock headcover that is more made-made than wool. It looks cool but is a bit of a pain to take on and off, especially in the wet and the sitching has already gone on our one so you may need to factor another headcover into your purchase.
There is a lot of style about the Cobra Men's AMP Driver, but don't be fooled as there is plenty of substance too from this excellent driver.
