One of my fave songs from childhood is "Waterloo." have heard that the Sweedish band ABBA did not speak English, and learned their lyrics phonetically. is this true?

I doubt it. I remember hearing them in interviews at the time and their English was quite good. They did have some hard s'es though.

Yes they did and that is why every syllable is one separate beat, making their music rather choppy.
