Post Do native english speakers understand well rap music?
Hi! I've been learning english for about 5 years, but I still understand almost nothing when I listen to english music especially rap music (for exemple 50 cent) . I know it's because in rap music they speak very fast with a lot of slang expressions, but I wanted to know if you, native english speakers, have difficulties to understand these kind of songs sometimes? Because even when I read lyrics I have difficulties to understand all of these expressions. Thank you for your answers!!
zack, you asked me what is my native language, it's french

Yeah, alot of rap songs include street slang:
Shizzle
dizzle
shank
cap

etc. I think it's awfull!

Don't feel bad ... half of the time, rappers seem to make up their own language anyway, and they frequently use a lot of slang and even words that they just made up.

Depends on the rapper, with some, only if I REALLY concentrate. Otherwise, no.
Don't feel bad, it's hard for native speakers aswell. What language are you coming from?

I don't understand it, and don't want to. It's crap, and you won't improve your english by listening to it.

I understand what they are saying

xD

But yeah, if you want to understand what they'r saying
just, you know
let that be the last thing or language to study.

it is the slang, even native english speakers do not understand unless they know the slang. I am trying to learn spanish and some times i get so lost when my fiance is talking with friends because he is talking slang, same with spanish rap. It will just take time to learn and understand the slang in any language.

you listen for certain words and look-up the lyrics. reading them while listening to a song will make it easier

Well, for one, I very often have no idea what words a singer or rapper is saying. And even when I do decipher what they are saying, the lyrics are vague, sometimes just random ideas strung together on a fun melody. Slang changes so often; who bothers to learn it all?
