I mean this in regards to people who speak English as their first language.

Not at all, I know people how can't read, and they can rebiuld any engine in any car, and I often call on them for automotive advice. And others who can't read or talk well. They tend to be the most realistic people I know.

With some folks here, English may not be their primary language, and I feel they deserve some latitude for at least trying.
Some spelling mistakes are just typos. Computer keyboards are hard for me to use after learning on the ancient electric typewriters, so I can understand that problem. (Even tho I try to correct my mistakes when I see themor when spell check does.)
The ones that are full of misspellings and sloppy grammar from people that just are too lazy to care, drive me crazy and I will either ignore the question and move on, or make some snide comment about it if I'm feeling nasty.

Of course not!!! i go to school with girls that are speaking English as a second language, and albeit it gets annoying when they constantly ask me how to spell things i don't think any less of them..... also people in my family don't spell correctly but i don't think less of them either! it doesn't really matter to me if they were uneducated or not....

If it's very bad, I'm afraid I do. I know that my spelling and grammar are not perfect, so a few mistakes here and there are easy to ignore. When every other word is a mistake, though, it bugs me.

Edited to add: Of course, the instant I find out that English is not somebody's first language, all errors become fully forgivable.

It usually depends on how badly things are misspelled or how badly they screw up the english language. If its an understandable mistake, then no, but if its an obvious, stupid mistake, then some times.

Not when they can't speak with correct grammar: not speaking perfect English is the American way. However, sometimes if they can't write with correct grammar I get peeved, but I'm reminded 'proper grammar' is an effect of perspective. Different people have different ways of saying the same thing and just because it doesn't look correct to me doesn't mean I don't know what they're saying. Of course, then there's the matter of legalese, which at all times demands correct grammar.

I don't think "less" of them, it just makes you take them not as seriously.

I'm not perfect in English either, though my first language. Sometimes I type too fast and invert a letter or two. I try to use a spell check.

English is a hard language. If I know it's their 2nd language, or even more, I respect them trying.

I hate when adults can't use the right word for things:

Like this:

I hate when adults cant' sue the write word four things.

It's over their.

Not fear (fair)

Etc.

I have a friend like that. She blames it on dyslexia, but that's like you said, basic grammar issues. She was never really taught it, nor was it enforced in her schooling. They fast tracked her and it didn't help. Today she struggles in college. I often think how she made it past English Composition 2.

I try not to, but it does drive me crazy sometimes when I see serious grammar issues. I like efficiency, and to me, if I have to read a paragraph multiple times because I can't understand half of the words, then that's not very efficient. May be quicker for the typer, but if the reader isn't of the same mindset as the typer, then it can only lead to confusion.

As far as speech goes, there's so many different accents and and local phrases (such as the "soda", "pop", or "coke" issue, depending on where you live) that it's hard to fault the speaker for being hard to understand.

Interesting question. I am in Iraq so I interface with Iraqi all the time. Most speak English as a Second Language (ESL). I think very highly of any one that takes on a second language to begin with. To me that is a mark of intelligence. In my youth anyone that spoke a second language was marked as being intelligent and with a higher level of culture. I look up to all of them because if they did not speak English we would be at an impasse. Yes, they will not speak with perfect grammar and their spelling is not the best BUT... I can communicate with them and with patience we can full understand each other.

For me, my answer is no, I do not think less of them. I think very highly of them for learning a language that is not their primary language. Some of my translators learned English by watching American movies on DVDs. Man, that is not easy.

I hope this will answer your question.
