Please I've been trying to teach myself for at least a year now. I took a class and I didn't like it because the teacher talked in Spanish the whole time and refused to speak English at anytime. What is the best software program?

I recommend getting a book, (Rosetta Stone is way too expensive) that can teach you the nuts and bolts (grammatical structures, some vocabulary), also be sure the book has tapes, because you need to know how to pronounce words, once you get down the grammar, I would start just memorizing x-number of vocabulary words a day, then once you think you are ready try to watch Spanish television programs, first with caption on (so you can see the Spanish words) then eventually take them off. You can also read Spanish stuff on the web, and there are 3 Spanish-speaking sections of Yahoo answers you can practice on.

Ultimately the final test is to actually go to a Spanish country, and speak with natives, some people would say to do this first, as you learn a lot of the language when it is the only language spoken, however, I prefer to actually know the language somewhat before having to use it to survive.

I think your teacher had the right idea of not teaching Spanish in English. But anyway, Rosetta Stone is a joke...it's an excellent example of good marketing. I really don't think there's any software program that will teach you a language out of the box...

First of all, I'd recommend that you get yourself on amazon.com and get yourself a language book, preferably something that can balance out both grammar and vocabulary. Lots of them have CD's or tapes now, which is great to let you hear the pronunciation first hand! Then I'd buy 3 notebooks, one for grammar, one for vocabulary, and one to test yourself on.

Set aside an hour in a day to learn it. Learn in whatever way suits you best, maybe making little cards, colouring them, and then sticking them into your book, or perhaps you like to record yourself and then listen to the playback? Whatever works for you. =]

A very good piece of software is Pimsleur. I haven't used it, but I have heard nothing but great reviews about it. It's used by the CIA and the FBI, and has attained great reviews, so it's well worth your time to check it out!

Pleasepleaseplease remember that Rome wasn't built in a day, so don't expect to know all your verbs in a week, and all vocabulary in a unit in 2 days. Perseverance is key. I've taught myself that the hard way by teaching myself Italian. You'll have days when you'll be on a roll and be like a sponge, absorbing everything, but you'll also have days where nothing seems to go in. Just pick yourself up, and move on, it WILL come.

Watch as much Spanish T.V. as you can.
Make up little conversations in your head.
Basically just immerse yourself in the language as much as you can.
