I studied through an VHS course, then did lots of reading and watched lots of tv, studied grammar and phonetics, after 15 years I'm petty much fluent at this language. (I certainly could have done much better, but I was not much dedicated to my studies.)
It has not opened the doors for triumph, but I'm very glad that I'm able to use it, because the internet in English is so much greater than in my native language.
I do not really use English in my daily life except for watching films and using the internet.

Re: ESLhow did you learn english? are you fluently in this language? english has opened you the door
I traveled a lot as a child and teenager because of my parents' professional needs, so I had to learn languages while I was growing up. French was compulsory (French school), but ENglish was also important.
But it wasn't until, years later, I went to live in UK that I can say I was completely fluent in the language. I think being fluent goes beyond the understanding and the ability to speak a language. In order to be fluent, you need to be familiar with the culture, psychology, habits, society and history of that country, as many words and figures of speech will have a long term heritage in those elements.
Having said that, you will be able to master the language to a satisfactory level by listening, speaking ans reading a lot - the latter is particularly important if you want to write.

english is my second language as well...come to think of it, maybe my third considering there are a lot of dialects that we use in my country...the school system here where i am incorporates the study of english from the early learnings unto college and a lot of the families are also practicing the use of it in my city...i do consider myself fluent in it, both in writing and in speech...in fact, i have used this skills to be able to be where i am now...i work in a contact center where we communicate with Americans everyday to do customer service or technical support and the main skill to perfect is the use of the US Language...using practice and recording myself and listening to the recordings has given me the necessary accest to be able to pass myself off as an American although i am half way across the world...if you want it enough, then you'll be fluent yourself...good luck!...:)
