Good recommendations for learning the Japanese language?

 Good recommendations for learning the Japanese language? I have learned a little already, but I am very serious and need more. I am also teaching my son who is very interested also.
I would like to learn how to speak and understand Japanese and also learn kanji, hiragana and katakana. I am not sure which is best to learn first.
Any good recommendations (and advice) are greatly appreciated, thank you!

Re: Good recommendations for learning the Japanese language? I don't have personal tips, but I know some great websites and free downloads!!
thejapanesepage.com gives free lessons and in-depth articles about grammar, pronunciation, and it shows all of the hirigana, katakana, and kanji along with some remembering tips. It's more of a beginner thing. Starts you off =]
another one is byki.com
You select the language you want and download. I really like it because you learn more actual words and and it takes you through "tests" and has a lot of usefull phrases that you'll use everyday!!
