Post Good & useful resources for learning Mandarin Chinese?
I'm interested in learning Mandarin Chinese. I don't think I have time for a class/tutor, though. Other than those, what other options are there to learn Chinese? (Such as CDs, CD-ROM software, books, etc.)

If you've taken a class or have had a tutor, you can comment on what you think as well.

Thank you!

Chinese is considered a hard-to-learn language and it is best to hbe in an actual class with an actual teacher. It takes alot to learn Chinese and just CD-ROM won't get you far enough for you to speak and write at an elementary school kid's level. I've been attending Chinese Saturday class's since preschool and now I am still taking class's for highschool level. You may want to find a friend that speaks and write Chinese fluently to help you if you really are going to depend on CD-ROM.

Kingsoft Powerword software.

Oxford COncise Eng/Chinese Dictionary

www.sina.com.cn (use the above tools to translate articles from here)

Rent/buy Chinese movies with subtitles.

Make a Chinese friend or two. Many of them want to improve their English.

I don't know how is your Chinese level. I think, if you have no ideas about this language, perhaps you need take a class to learn basic knowledge about Chinese Writing and Pronunciation. But when you have known about them, you shall speak with someone speaking Chinese. That will be helpful.
I'm a Chinese in Shanghai. Perhaps the pronunciation is difficult to a new learner. But you can improve it if you keep to learn and correct your tone.
Good luck !

See if you have a local Chinese school that offers adult/conversational classes - if you don't have any experience with Asian languages it's almost critical to have a live teacher to correct your pronunciation, etc. Listening to CDs will help too - for reading/writing it's mostly memorization and practice.
