I would go with the soldier writing from Iraq since it's a current thought in everyone's mind.

Reasons he could be writing: He saw someone die, he's frightened by the war, he's questioning the craziness of the war, he misses her and the kids and can't wait to see them, he's coming home soon since he's been wounded.

Also, you could have a soldier writing to a buddy's wife after that buddy had been killed in action:

"Henry was a great guy and one heck of a human being. One night he had us all cracking up with his President Bush impressions and he made us forget the insanity over here for a while. One time I found him giving some of his C-rations to a little boy who looked as if he hadn't had a square meal in about five years. Kind of scary to think of since the kid was about three. He also managed to hold football games with all the kids around here, and he'd tell us that there had to be football in Heaven. He would talk about you and your little girl all the time, and he called you his shining stars. Whenever we hit the sack at night, I would see him looking up at the stars above, and I know he was thinking of you. Two days ago we were trying to evacuate an unsafe building, and Henry was doing a final sweep to make sure we had gotten everyone out. He was on the second floor when the structure gave way and collapsed on top of him. He was an incredible guy, ma'am, and you can be proud of him. He died while trying to save others, and I'm sure that when he sees Saint Peter, he'll have a front-row seat to all the football games that go on up in Heaven."

Don't use my letter (that would be cheating), but you can use it to get ideas from. War isn't just fighting and shooting, but it's also dealing with it in a variety of ways.

Good luck.
