Hiring foreigners in Eastern Asian countries?
I'm interested in being an ESL teacher in China, Korea or Japan (probably Japan) and I've read a few posts that getting jobs can be very "image-based." Someone said that they had trouble getting hired in Taiwan because she was older, black and a bigger sized woman. I've also read several posts that say "blonde, tall, busty, size 2, blue eyed Caucasian women" are hired more often for English teachers. Especially when a male is in charge of hiring. Is this true? Is predjudism against looks very common for foreigners (especially women) in Eastern Asia countries? Please post any info. Thanks. Also is there predjudism for any jobs (not just teaching)? No, I mean have people ever seen or expierienced this type of predjudism. I'm not looking for jobs.

Re: Hiring foreigners in Eastern Asian countries?
There may be some discrimination, but generally I think it is not happening very openly. Given the great demand for ESL teacher, I don't think whomever is responsible for hiring would discriminate based on looks or race. Teaching ESL seems to be a very rewarding experience, and I am personally considering a change of career and to teach in China next year. From what I heard from many friends who are teaching ESL in Asia, China and Korea are the favourite locations. Japan is an interesting country but the comment I get from friends who taught there is that making personal connections with Japanese is a little harder than with Chinese or Koreans who are more upfront and curious about foreigners and who will not hesitate to strike a conversation with an English-speaking foreigner. Perhaps Japanese are more reserved? True or not, I don't know.

Yes, unfortunately when I went there, there is clear prejudice. They are indeed more likely to hire a white teacher than a black teacher.
Even myself, I was born in SE Asia, but raised in Canada, and there was definately discrimination against me. It's just a fact of life over there....they don't think it's that harmful or wrong. Just another cultural adjustments.
