Other people other than Americans speak English. For example....the ENGLISH!!! We invented the language here in the UK, it's spoken in Australia, New Zealand and Canada and my billions more as a second language. I suggest practise, practise, practise, preferably with a native speaker.

Just buy tapes and CDs and listen to them wherever you go in your walkman.

So much slang in the english language. listen for context clues. Time is the only thing that will help you.

Re: How can a non-American learn English well?
Anyway, Americans themselves don't speak English well. You should read lots of classic novels, buy grammar books, and speak to English people. Movies are good only for acquiring an accent but not for learning good grammar. The key to learning any language is practice and knowing a lot of vocabulary. Good luck.

Well I learned when I was about 3. I learned spanish and english at the same time.
My mom would talk to me in english and my dad in spanish. Then I learned by watching movies in english and reading in english.

Re: How can a non-American learn English well?
If you have the money, you can obviously take English courses.
If you have friends who can speak better English, have them correct you whenever you mis-pronounce/mis-spell a word.
I would also suggest to watch lots of American movies, but pay attention to how they pronounce the words and try to imitate them. Try not to depend on the subtitles or turn them off completely.
