Post How do I create a lesson plan?
I have to create a mock lesson plan for ESL students (as part of a job interview). Those students are Japanese adults who have had about 5 years of basic English education, but are still considered beginners. I have no idea where to start or how to go about picking a topic for a lesson plan, and I was hoping someone with a little ESL-teaching background could help.

The lesson plan has to be 30 mins long, and I'll have to roleplay 5 mins of it with the other people in the group interview. More specifically, I have to focus on conversation with a lot of interaction between students. If anyone has any input or suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Check your textbooks from your special education classes. Also contact those that teach adult ed and migrant studies.

Here are the basic steps for any lesson plan:

1. Determine what your objectives are...these are the things the students should be able to do by the end of class...pick 2-3 objectives.

2. Your opening should be roughly 5 minutes...have some type of activity for the students to work on as soon as they enter the room. Give them a few minutes to complete the assignment then explain your lesson's agenda (what your are going to do) and tell them the objectives of the lesson (what they will learn - this shouldn't be a surprise to them)

3. Create 2-3 mini-lessons that are 5-10 minutes long...each mini-lesson should address one of the objectives.

4 Closure - save the last 3-5 minutes for a closure activity The closure activity should demonstrate that the students met the objectives - it is your way of determining if the lesson was successful (could be considered your assessment). Also, closure is a great way to reinforce the objectives...

Good luck!

Try something that involves the telephone. Have the students pretend to call each other to set up a play date for their children . Both men and women have to do that . Or have a conversation with the teacher the first day of school. Have them ask about supply list, dress code, bus schedules school schedules , vacations times etc.

Set up a mock of teaching your students job interview skills.
This will make you stand out in the interview process.

Start by teaching students about professional resumes and the importance of them, give them a sample. Then

Pair the students up and give them a list of questions that they might encounter during an interview process. After a few minutes have them switch roles and then move around the room. It helps get you acclimated to talking to different people, with different accents, as not everyone in America speaks American English clearly. I am in a Speech class in college and our Speech instructor is going over interviews with us as well. He did this with us last week and next week we will do an interview with him. We have to make mock resumes and sit with him through an interview. Sitting with the other students who were new at this was a great help in preparing to speak with him. I hope this helps.
