How do I plan out a lesson plan for an ESL kindergarten class?
I just moved to the UAE. A school whose students speak mainly in Arabic, requested from me to teach KG1 students English. They did not provide me with a workbook or any teacher resources. I don't know how to go about teaching ESL. Please help!

Here's an interesting article on teaching ESL to
kindergartners...http://esllanguageschools.suite101.com/article.cfm/teaching_kindergarten.
You might ask if there are other teachers doing this. Contact them to collaborate on curriculum and strategies.

Talk to the Kindergarten teachers at the school to see what they are covering in the regular ed. classes. Also...do they have standards there? Otherwise I would assume that they need to know what all K students need to know. Colors, shapes, numbers, the alphabet...a place to start at least.

Re: How do I plan out a lesson plan for an ESL kindergarten class?
I teach KG2 in Kuwait and I can tell u that our teachers cover numbers 1-20, opposites, colors, shapes, the alphabet sounds, and basic vocabular. I have to let u know that teaching KG1 is the most difficult class. Ur students are coming to school for the first time and they are jumping into a lanuage they do not know. Please be patient and work with the parents as much as possible. Use a lot of visual aids. Pictures, games, art projects, will be ur friends. Avoid a lot of worksheets. These kids come in not knowing how to use scissors and most of them do not know how to hold a pencil or crayon. Coloring is not an activity that they engage in often. So most of the beginning of the term will be used in classroom management and behavior.Good Luck!
