I would say in a Language like ours its very important. For example, we have so many variations of words like "Witch" we need to make sure we're using the correct form. Also certain words if grammar isnt used correctly it just looks daft in my opinion like don't dont the ' is used to signal a missing letter.

However i do feel also that grammar and spelling isnt quite "paramount" as we can half the time understand bad spelling - grammar perhaps, because it singnals sentance break up.

It also depends on what genre your writing in - formal - informal etc. Because informal half the time their just your friends so they know what you're on about anyway!

It is very important. So many words are abbreviated these days that children are not able to spell simple words like "am" because it is written in all the text books as "I'm" Spelling and grammar are very important.

It depends on the nature of the communication. It cannot be quantified or qualified accurately in a general sense.

Good Luck!!!

Top question jeeves. It is pivotal. I am happy to keep answering questions that are not spelled correctly. I think it shows great courage by people who obviously want to improve their spelling - well done!

There is no room for creative spelling, except perhaps in the early, early grades. Students and those who write are encouraged to do diligence on being responsible for what they send out to others' eyes. What one permits, one encourages. There is no excuse for bad grammar if a word-processing document has grammar check. Otherwise, use a book or the net to determine corrections. Never publish a first draftthat is exactly what it is, a first draft.

It's all about context. It's fine to use text-speak to communicate with your friends, but if you can't write a job application without saying "I wud lik 2 wrk 4 u bcos..." then it's getting filed under 'B' for bin I'm afraid!

It depends on the context, but personally I think that it is very important. For example if you send a CV to a company when you are looking for a job, they will not be impressed if you can't get the spelling right. I know employers who will throw a CV in the bin if they notice spelling mistakes on it. I also find it very hard to take people seriously if they email or write to me with a lot of spelling or grammatical errors. In this day in age, it is easier than ever to make sure your spelling is correct, with the spell-checking facilities on our computers.

Who would you want to represent you in court; someone who can spell and knows correct grammar, or someone who can barely conjugate a verb?

Reading is key to becoming well rounded, both intellectually and in writing skills. You get respect and better paying jobs when you can communicate properly.

I asked a similar question a couple of weeks ago. In essence, those replies that were properly written tended to support correct grammar and spelling whereas those that were barely decipherable were often aggressively defensive of a more laissez-faire approach.

Good grammar and spelling are essential if communication is to be clear, concise and understandable. I find that some of the Q&As on here are illiterate to the point of incomprehensibilty - I'm sure the person has a valid point to make, I would just be grateful to know what it is!

One thing I noted from the replies to my question was how vitriolic the ignorant could be in defence of their illiteracy.
