Post I have a goal to learn other languages, namely Hebrew and Portuguese; any tips?
I have studied Hebrew in the past but was unable to finish the course. I had a friend who spoke both Spanish and Portuguese. (Just to give background on how I got interested in these two languages). I have picked up some Italian and can understand both it, and the same goes for Portuguese. My goal is to learn more Portuguese as well as more Hebrew. As a fun "study aid" I listen to music. For example, I have a few cd's by Brazilian star Roberto Carlos. What are some other good groups/ soloists that I should be on the look out for to help me learn more vocabulary for either/ both languages? Please add any other useful learning tips you feel would be helpful. Oh, and finally, why is it that Brazil and Portugal's languages are different? Is the difference in language drastic, or not as much (as with English spoken by people from England, compared to American spoken English)? Thanks in advance; I know this is a multi-layered issue question.

I love this website, it has many features. In French it's better than in English though

To listen to music is a really nice motivation to lear a new language...but Roberto Carlos sucks....

Listen to CPM 22, Detonautas Roque Clube, Capital Inicial, Legião Urbana, Skank, Strike...if you like rock/pop rock.

Zeca Pagodinho, Dudu nobre, Martinho da Vila, Jorge Aragão, if you like samba.

Tom Jobin, Chico Buarque, Elis Regina, Sérgio Mendes, Sérgio Ricardo if you like Bossa Nova.Foreigns use to like Bossa Nova, but brazilians don't...

One difference between our portuguese (I'm brazilian) to Portugal's one is the present continuous.
We cut the "r" at the end of the verb and put "ndo" like fazer-fazendo (to do-doing) ,correr-correndo (to run-running)....and they put an "a" before the verb and don't modify it like fazer- a fazer, correr- a correr.
They just use "tu" as second person of singular (you), we use "tu" and "você".Tu and você have different conjugations, tu fazes, você faz (você uses third person of singular conjugation) and they use "vós" as second person of plural, we use você.Vós fazeis, vocês fazem (vocês use third person of plural conjugation). The rest is similar, at least I don't remenber any drastic difference, just like USA and England.

Hope I was usefull, sorry my english...bye

Let me see...the main differences between Portuguese spoken in Portugal and Brazilian Portuguese are:

*second person verbal forms are seldom used
*pronunciation is different
*The word order is more flexible in Brazilian Portuguese
*some differences in the spelling

I think the differences are similar to the American and British English. Europeans are rather formal and conservative whereas Americans (both English and Portuguese) are more casual.

I hope help ya ;D
