use practical exercises that apply to everyday life. Cars, shopping, socializing. Their home towns, food, culture
I would love to work in that field. Can you give me any pointers?

Hockey pictures, books on hockey, stories about the Montreal Canadiens. Books dealing with Canadian or Quebec history or high interest but low english vocabulary stories.
Getting a picture file , magazines, newspapers, even photographs that they have taken and have them tell a story about that picture or write a story about that picture.

Spell to Write and Read is a curriculum that can be used to teach ESL. Wanda Sanseri is the author. I know she has a yahoogroup which you might want to join in order to get some ideas. There are several trainers including the author on the yahoogroup.
My initial idea is to get them to learn the phonetic sounds of the alphabet and then get them to quiz each other with flash cards...it will get them interacting with one another.

Photocopy the singles colomn from the newspaper. It's great to learn how to describe someone physically . I suppose if they are second semester though they'll already be able to do that. Oh well its a suggestion anyway!
