Is a online tefl qualification enough to teach english in south asia?
hi,
I have completed a 20hour weekend tefl course with the company itoi, as well as a 40 hour online course... however having completed these qualifications I still feel very unconfident about where to actually begin when it comes to teaching english as a foreign language (do you start with the abc's or more complex grammar?)
Due to my lack of confidence in my ability to teach after taking these courses I applied to do a Celta qualification. I have been accepted to do this course, however the literature makes the course sound more like a boot camp rather than good fun (which is essentially what i am going away for)... furthermore I only intend to teach english for 8 months with this been a means to fund my trip. I therefore do not want a month of this been a stressful (and expensive) experience.
I am therefore i a real dilema and would appreciate any advice... In particular from anybody who has done just a tefl certificate (not celta) and is now teaching.
Thanks,
Alan

If you are a native English speaker with a bachelor's degree, you are qualified by many programs to teach. Many of those schools have programs already in place and you simply need to follow the curriculum.

NO
Asia is not a city or one country.
Asia h Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Afghanistan, Malaysia etc.
The English dialect, pronunciation and way of expressing is different in different countries.
So, a small knowledge of English may create confusion or sometimes a gross misunderstanding.
If you want to teach, be a master.

In South Asia you barely need a tefl diploma. If you have your BA then you'll have no problem for the most part. Indonesia, Korea, Japan, and China do NOT require any more than a BA. Thailand can be iffy, but if you talk to the right schools who know the right people... Regardless, Asia's requirements are a joke. Trust me, I've been all over this continent teaching, and I got my online diploma from bridge-linguatech (which no school ever really asks for).
