Something is not dominate, it's dominant (dominate is a verb)
should of does not exist - it's should've
Our is not spelled are
lose has only one o

When I see spelling this laughably atrocious, it tells me that the person never reads (except the posts of other spelling-impaired individuals on the internet).

It's become increasingly apparent that this country has a bleak future.

Internet message board posts are not a good basis for drawing conclusions about literacy in America.

It appears that a lot of people here on this site are completely unaware of what a spell checker is.

I agree. When you spell incorrectly or use bad grammar, it completely invalidates anything you are trying to say. Proofread your posts.

The English language, like all other languages in the world, is a living entity. It changes over the years, though I prefer to say that it evolves. Spelling, in the fifteenth century was very different from what it is today, and will change again over the next few centuries. It is a perfectly normal process, and nothing to be afraid of. English, as spoken in England is different from American English, just as French, as spoken in France, is different from Canadian French,
You have to accept the fact that Britain and America, instead of being united by the same langusge, are divided by the same language.

I agree with you, and I disagree with Mattdude. I think internet posts are an excellent indicator of how people communicate, since the vast majority of Americans use the internet. Web posts are not like instant messaging, where bad grammar can be excused by the fact that messages are being exchanged at a high rate of speed. Most people sit down and think about what they're going to say in a web post, and if what they come up with is a bunch of misspelled gibberish, then it is because they don't know how to spell and put words together in a way that makes sense to others. We're not talking about typographical errors- we're talking about a complete lack of ability to understand the difference between "to" and "too," which should have been learned in the second grade.

People are getting stupider and stupider. With our access to modern technology, and the ability to share information and easily conduct research from a desk, we should be inventing jet packs and cures for cancer.

I recently posted a question in the Senior Citizens' section, asking if seniors are simply smarter than the younger generations. I really enjoy reading stories and discussions posted by older people, who are much easier to understand. I know a few other people my age (31) who feel the way I do, but we are unusual. It is much cooler to misspell everything and substitute numbers for letters.

I recently received a message on mySpace from a gentleman asking, "What it do, shawty?" I understand that colloquialisms add flavor, but I had no idea what the hell he was talking about, or how to reply to his question.

Wow, do be more selective and don't blanket millions of us because of a few lazy individuals who didn't pay attention in English/Spelling class and/or can't be bothered to use "spell check".

Many of us DO know how to spell properly or look words up if we are unsure. I'm no English major but I do okay and don't use text-speak except when I'm text messaging (and that's because it's easier when you're working with a 1" x 1" screen.

SOME Americans spell poorly...but then that goes for SOME people from any country.

My eleven year old daughter tells me it's not cool to spell correctly. She claims it makes you seem like a fussy typer. Also, I'm an avid reader and consider myself fairly intelligent but I've always had issues with spelling.
