i wanna become a western singer.i luv singing english songs.i liv in east DELHI.but i cant find any teacher out here who teaches wesstern music.then i was told by some1,dat i need to learn indian classical vocal music 1st(dis teacher is available too) in order to enhance my western singing abilities.IS IT TRUE ?? please help .i'd like to have some suggestions.

That's absurd. Centuries of Western singers learned without ever even having heard (let alone studied) Indian music. Likewise, India never needed Western music (and often, when I hear Bollywood music, I think they would have been better off without it.)

It's a different tradition of vocal production, for sure, and learning both will give you vocal flexibility of style; many Western musicians think there is only one way to sing. The really valuable thing that Indian study will bring is awareness of pitch; many Western singers have exceedingly coarse ears for pitch from singing with the piano. It won't be a waste, but it won't take you where you want to go very directly.

I don't know of any American or European singers in any style or genre of music who started out learning to sing Indian classical music first. American and European singers learn by singing the Western music style of their choice whether it be opera or jazz or pop or rock or country or whatever.

It may be that studying with a voice teacher who teaches Indian classical music will teach you something about tone production, breathing or singing technique, but the style is totally different, and the scales used in Indian music are different from scales used in Western music. I think the vocal sounds considered beautiful or desirable in Indian music may be very different from what is considered desirable or beautiful in most styles of Western music as well.

So I'm not really sure that studying Indian classical voice would actually help you very much if your goal is to sing Western music, especially Western pop, rock or jazz.

No one in the US is learning classical Indian styling before working on European or American songs.

But any singing you learn will be helpful. Vocal control, range, languages are all important, and are basic to any style. Get what you can, worry about western styles later.
