Is Japan a welcoming and friendly country?
This question is in no way meant to cause offence.
I'm asking because I plan to move there and teach English.
I've heard that the Japanese are extremely welcoming to visitors to their country, but not to foreigners who wish to stay there permanently.
Is this true?
I plan to learn everything about the culture at university. Will having very good knowledge of the country, language and culture improve my chances of being accepted?
Thank you.

Re: Is Japan a welcoming and friendly country?
I went during the summer when it was 2006, and it was so much fun! We went for business and when we got off the plane, they gave me and my brother candy! It sort-of got boring when we stood for two months, but overall it was a friendly country.

Yeah the Japanese are welcoming. By all means learning about their culture is a must. You have to know what you can and can't do. Like you can't blow your nose in public.
You can go out for dinner and people don't speak English. You should learn a few words.

Generally the people are very nice in japan but you have a small minority, just like in any country, that are xenophobic.

Mostly friendly and welcoming. Like any other country, you will encounter a few foreigner hating racists, but they are the exception.
