And if it's not, is it still a worthwhile experience? Which countries are the best to work in? Any horror stories? Good stories?

Also, is a certificate III in TESOL a sufficient qualification to do a good job as a teacher?
p.s. I have an Australian accent... if that makes any difference.
surely there must be more ESL teachers out there? your opinions are appreciated :) thanks for the answers so far.

I taught ESL in East LA for five years. I'd like to back to Brasil and teach there!

It depends one what you're after. What do you want to get out of the experience? What cultures interest you more than others?

In many countries, you can basically just show up, interview, and land a job teaching higher level conversational English.

North American accent is typically in higher demand, so you can usually outcompete local teachers if you're from the U.S. or Canada.

experience teaching in Japan.

More than anything, teaching abroad gives you a chance to figure out the culture of where you are IF you leave the classroom and have some curiosity on your own.

If you make a conscious effort learn the language (which is very difficult for english teachers) you can do well to get a true feel of the country.

I would suggest you create two identities. One the nice smiling person and work ready to share your english with everyone, and after work, lie about speaking english so that people with speak to you in the native tonuge.

Tell people you are american, austrialian or british and even little kids with be practicing english on you.

Dont teach ESL for the job, teach it so you can see to world.
