The most popular resouce used for learning English include 'Friends', 'Desperate Housewives', 'Lost', 'Forrest Gump', 'Sex and the city' I am worrying it may cause negetive affect. What do you think?

If that can help them learn English, why not?

Yes and no. They may learn slang (informal language) by watching those shows and movies, which is good because people do use slang in real life. However, obviously, it may not be the best way to START learning a language.

If you could find interesting documentaries or other non-fiction shows, that may be better for learning the formal structure of English.

It is good for basic daily communication only.

However, it's the way I learned.

I encourage my English students here in China to watch English language movies. It sure as hell takes away the boredom of listening to audio taps and cd's to learn a language. Plus it makes it enjoyable to them. Any tool to teach is fine with me.

I don't care about any negative affect, they are going to get that no matter what. We can't protect people from stuff that is already out there. But one thing that is their saving grace, in China, family is everything. That is where the foundation of good moral behavior really lays, not with withholding content from them that they will see anyway.
