Re: For native English speakers: do you understand the words of the songs or do you need to read the
Yes, I usually understand it. I won't understand it the FIRST time if it's a rap song (they talk really fast and use a bunch of slang), or if computers are used to make the voices sound funny.
=)
I don't really have any advice to give you. I guess just try practicing a LOT by well.... watching movies, watching the news, and listening to the radio. TRY to not look up lyrics until you have listened to the song at least 6 times. The lyrics sort of give you a "fall back" meaning, "i don't understand, so I'm going to look at the lyrics and cheat". hehehe....xD Don't do that! Try! Try writing down what you hear, and then see if you get it right.

Re: For native English speakers: do you understand the words of the songs or do you need to read the
im 100% english and sometimes i cant understand a word they're saying.
lyrics usually involve silly metaphors and sayings too, so they wont make sense.
the only thing i can advise is to learn some english slang phrases and general sayings, then you might be able to pick up a little bit more in songs, but probably not much.

Re: For native English speakers: do you understand the words of the songs or do you need to read the
Like any language, songs use a lot of words and phrases that are usually more difficult to understand if you don't know the language very well.
Sometimes, just because of the singer's voice or the way the sound is, I have to read the lyrics.
As you continue learning the language, you will get better at understanding songs... just keep trying, it's a challenge when learning any new language.

for some songs i dont need to read the lyrics and for other, fast paced ones i need to read the lyrics to understand them
the only advice i can give you is to read the lyrics beforehand and so that way you will understand what the song is talking about..

Re: For native English speakers: do you understand the words of the songs or do you need to read the
Lol some songs are harder than others even for native english speakers. In any language, singing kind of blurs some words, and since english is like the second hardest language to learn, its even worse.
I don't know about advice to understand songs better, but it helps to just listen closer, sometimes after a few listens it suddenly makes sense. :) Just try to think of what the things they're saying sounds like the most and it'll be close.

Many songs the musical instruments drown out the words and I like to check the lyrics. I am a life long English speaker and a lot of the time I am not sure of the lyrics to popular songs.

Re: For native English speakers: do you understand the words of the songs or do you need to read the
Sometimes I have a difficult time understanding the lyrics of a song. I listen to country music and sometimes it can get too fast for me to understand. I have lived in Texas my whole entire life and esp. favor George Strait. Sometimes, when listening to other artists, I have trouble understanding. Therefore, I look them up on the internet...if I can remember a few words to the song. Some advice when listening to the song is if you have a CD and have some time to stop and rewind it, listen to it over and over until you can understand. If not, the easiest way is just to look up the lyrics online. You will get better in your English speaking. Good luck & God bless!

Re: For native English speakers: do you understand the words of the songs or do you need to read the
I am a native speaker too, and no I can not understand all songs. I listen to all forms of music, some rap, hiphop, pop, country, alternative, rock, polka, spanish/dutch/german music, etc etc. Alot of the oldies, country, and slow rock are all very understandable, but I have alot of trouble with some of the faster paced songs, I can normally understand 70%, with the courses being the easiest (and generally slower), heck I tend to make up my own words sometimes. I can normally figure it mostly out after a few listens I defiantly wouldn't worry about it if you can't understand it.

ask yorself:
When you listen to the songs in your native language do you need to read the lyrics?
:D
the more words you know the more songs you can comprehend (incluring some slang expressions which are often used in them)

Re: For native English speakers: do you understand the words of the songs or do you need to read the
In most music, you should be able to understand almost every word. When singing in English, it is common to drag out some syllables to create a better harmony. So don't be to distraught. Some songs, such as in rap, are very hard for anyone to understand. The fast paced flow of words is even hard for most native speakers. You seem to be doing great.
