Both are valid options, thanks to internet, and DVDs. Concentrate on the listening comprehension exercises though as the English is grammatically correct.

Definitely a good one. When I started living in Germany I spent a lot of time watching TV of varying levels (children's TV up to cop shows) and it helped a lot. Immersion is the key to learning a language. Since moving to the States my German knowledge faded, but I have recently got the Dish Network German package and it really helped get me back up to speed.

Biggest difference, German is written as it sounds, whereas English is one big anomaly. So if you hear a word you don't know, you may not know how to spell it to look it up.

tough question,
its studying English. it would be hard to learn a Language by watching a movie,
But it does help you can learn new words
i do that, but you have to watch that
part over & over to really get it.
it does help listening skills.

I learned a lot of Spanish by watching telenovelas and listening to the music. You learn the language of the land and popular phrasing instead of the pencil is yellow and the book is red.

AS a secondary job I teach ESL.
English movies from England are great as they have strong dialogue.

American movies are the prefered diet of second language learners as in the main they have a restricted language script and plenty of repetition.

Hence all of my students who watch American films can swear with joyous abandon and sometimes a complete unawareness of just what is popping out of their mouths!

Watching movies and television in English is a huge help towards learning the language. We see this with exchange students from countries such as Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands, who don't dub American and British movies into their own languages. They leave them in English and use subtitles. Their language skills are much superior to other students.
