Teach in College with a certificate?
Hi guys! I am currently studying at Laval University to obtain my bachelor degree in Teaching English as a Second Language in Quebec. After my studies, I will be able to teach in high school as well as in primary school. However, I would like to teach in a Cegep (College), but I don't know if getting a certificate after my bachelor degree instead of getting a master degree will allow me to do so. I'm aware that this might be a tricky question for those of you who are not from Quebec but I thought that maybe one of you had an answer to my question . Thank you very much, Samuel

High Sam, I don't have the formal answer for your question but I think that I heard inbetween branches that you need to get a master in order to teach to colldge. I don't know if it changed but I seriously dought that you can teach there just with your bachelr degree, otherwise it would be written in the prgram and you would have practicumm in these schools as well during your bachelor. Although maybe you can get to your gaol by only getting a certificate, maybe you should check out with one of your teacher.

Hey Cyndie and Sam,
What I heard was that having a Master Degree was necessary to teach in CÉGEP. HOWEVER, I know that this year a certificate is available for those who desire to know more about what is given in CÉGEP's English courses. Although a Master Degree is said to be necessary, I think that with that kind of certificate it is possible for you to teach in CÉGEP, especially if you plan on teaching in farther villages or cities. I am from the Magdalen Islands and I thik it would be possible for me to teach there with a certificate only at the beginning... or is it because I have already for the Commission Scolaire in charge? I can't really tell. But I know a few teachers there that were allowed to teach with one condition: studying to get their master's degree at the same time. Maybe THAT works for everywhere...? It probably goes along the number of candidates applying for the job too.
I hope it helps a bit!

Stremblay, I am in the same situation as you. I also would like to teach in CEGEP and I informed myself about the requirements. Here is the main consensus.
If you want to teach in the cities' (Québec Montréal and TR) CÉGEP, you have to have a master's degree with the certificate OR be an anglophone that can pull a few strings. If you wan to teach in a CÉGEP that is near an above mentioned city, you need the certificate OR the masters. Usually, they prefer people with a certificate because they are cheaper to hire (a Master's degree will give you a better wage). If you want to get deep into the woods you can teach in small town CÉGEPs with only your bacc. you'l have a lower wage. It's up to you buddy. I have also heard that sometimes it's better to simply teach in high schools for 5 or so years while trying to get a few connections with the CÉGEP and to jump on the first possible opportunity. Finally, it's a question of luck. you need an available spot to teach there... no teachers that will retire soon = no available spot
I hope this helps.

Yes, I heard the same thing as Michel. I think that in order to teach at a college level you need to have your bachelors degree in teaching, as well as your masters degree, in Quebec. I have heard that some schools may hire teachers who don't have their masters yet, because they are in need of personel, but that they take preference in people who have both degrees completed, or as Michel said, someone who is enrolled in the masters degree program. I'm not so sure how the whole certificate thing works though, it's new, so we don't really know how this certificate affects your chances of employment at the college level.

I think this is a great option if we can do that. Doing a master degree requires tons of engagement from the students, and excellent grades to be included in the program. I know already some people that are teaching in Cegep without this certificat or master degree. I find it interesting that we are given a choice concerning Cegep teaching. I have some concerns according to the certificat. Is it approved by all schools or are there some schools that do not take teachers with a certificat. In a case where some schools are looking for teachers, do master degree teachers have a certain advantage on certificat teachers?
Well, in my opinion, I think that the certificat or master degree plays for a small part of the background. Having experience in teaching is what is researched throughout the province. Some teachers do not have the required scolarity to teach in some schools, but they compensate with their dynamism, their cultural background and knowledge, as well as their experience. Therefore, I don't think that there is a clear advantage from one to another.
