Post Teaching for non teachers?
I am British, and have a BA (Hons) from the UK, and an MBA from the USA. I am planning to leave the UK to experience the world again (have travelled for a year before) and spend a few years in various countries (no exact plans yet, India, Vietnam, Taiwan, China). To help fund it and to gain a true insight into cultures I am considering teaching English (ideally just spoken English, and basic writing). I have no teaching qualfications allthough have done training at work. Can anyone advise me if schools will accept me? and if not the quickest way to a suitable teaching qualification. Thanks

Many students now do this as a way of funding their travels, and there are many language schools which provide relatively short, intensive "English as a Second/Foreign Language courses" Search for Language schools in your local area, and make some enquiries there. I know some UK students who have taken 6 week courses with language schools, and teh school has also helped them gain employment abroad.

Good luck!

Tons of agencies will hire anyone with just a bachelor's degree to teach abroad. Japan imports loads of English instructors at fairly good salaries. A Google of "teach abroad" or "teach English" should produce many hits. You might also speak with the consulate or embassy of countries that interest you.

In the US, teachers are in such short supply that many districts will hire you with a provisional certificate and sponsor you to take education courses between terms.

I went to Transfer in Paris, France. The course was very intensive and the teachers were very strict but it was a good experience. They offer the CELTA Tefl certificate. I have only only kept in contact with two people from class and all of us have found work either teaching in a school pr tutoring. You will find all kinds of school on the Internet but beware of schools that have bad reputations. Try reading Dave's ESL cafe website for more info on that subject. You need to be cautious as well for the schools that you try to work for and make sure that you read the entire contract and that they give you a contract in English. Some schools in Asia have been noted for not compensating their teachers for travel costs and or their pay. I'll give the websites. Good luck to you.

TEFLs are what you need to look at, the best one to do is CELTA, it takes a month to do and costs a grand. I did it and it's quite hard work, good preparation for when you finally get out there though.
