First of all you'll need time. No one learns anything overnight or we'd all be geniuses. Secondly, Spanish is a Latin based language so all the words have a direct link to Latin root words. We say "aqua" as the color of the ocean or water, water is said "agua", or aquarious or aquarium. There are thousands of such commonalities. You speak to him in English and he'll speak to you in Spanish, do some body language to boot and you'll be learning the "lenguaje" which is "language" which is a derivative of of the Latin word "lengua" which means "tongue". You'll get the jist of it.

Although you only understand basics, you guys should try talking each one of you in your language, and mix a few words of the other's language so that at least you get an idea of what the other is trying to say, at first it just helps you to get used to the sounds of the words, eventually you'll begin understanding more and more, it's just the way babies learn their mother tongue, and of course ask for meanings of the words you don't understand (in the language being spoken, NOT a translation of the word, only the meaning) and once you start understanding words try incorporating them when you talk, in other words it's ok to speak SPANGLISH I've found this as one of the greatest methods of learning without going to a school, and this way you both are learning at the same time.
PS TV gelps a lot too!

Re: The best way to go about teaching him english, and helping me learn spanish?? Any Advice Or Idea
As a resident of the UK and having learnt two different foreign langages I found that the best thing to do is: (are I should say)
i. socialise with people of the langage u r learning
ii. learn a lot of vocabulary and initially forget about the gramar: if u r trying to say to a shop keeper using correct grammar without the proper words, he/she'll never understand; however, if u use the correct words with the wrong grammar, u'll be understood; grammar will come with time or when u have time in the futur (classes ...etc).
iii. try to learn let say 5 new words a day that is a lot after a few months, especially if u add what u know already, about 2000 words I think constitues a good base and gives the ability to have a conversation.
iv. when learning new vocabulary, try to group related words togather, like everything related to the kitchen, bathroom, car ...etc it is easier on the brain.
v. read a novel with the help of a dictionary choosing a current book, and not something from the 17th century.
vi. bloody hard work and keep at it
good luck
By the way I'm algerian and learnt french and english, would love to learn german if I had the time.

A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of online courses which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt
