You don't need a regular ed. certification, but need certification in Special Education from an accredited university. You can also start out with an emergency certification, but I would suggest getting certified in a Special Ed. Generalist program. It will allow you to work with students 5-21, all levels of needs. Check your state website, as well. You can get a Masters in Special Ed. in 2 years, with certification. The fact that you are already certified ESL is great and a huge benefit to you.
