At minimum you have to have a university degree. That is waht I needed. I spent 3 years teaching English and I loved it. JET is one program and there are others too. Check some of them out.

Well sounds like a good thing to look forward to. I think the best way to get into teaching english in Japan is to get a university degree with a major or minor in english, it is a must if you want to teach in Japan on a working visa,on the other hand you could possibly get married and be eligible for working in Japan, the thing about the english teaching companies is that they can only sponsor people with university degrees for working visas,so i you have a spouse visa you can usually enter the company without much hassle. check out www.gaijinpot.com for some ideas of the types of jobs offered. Heres a tip, dont try working for nova or aeon those places are a rip, there are better places to work at here just have to search. On the topic of antiques and katanas and whatnot there are pieces for sale but not cheap, you can find genuine samurai outfit if you ask local people. i know a place that has it all if you want to know also. ganbatte!

Re: what do you have to do to teach english in japan?
a lot of people in work in japan as assistant english teachers or private teachers in companies like nova so i hope those positions are what you're talking about. all companies vary in expectations but usually, you'll need to have a university degree, speak native english (american/canadians are usually preferred), be a citizen of an english speaking country, no criminal record and i think you're set.
I have seen katana swords around so i wouldn't say they are hard to find but they aren't just everywhere either. no, i don't think they sell their antique katanas because it's much too precious. I've seen them in museums behind glass displays if that draws a picture for you.

I am currently teaching English in Japan on the JET Programme. You can google JET Programme and read more about it. One thing that you will probably need for any program is a college degree. However Japanese ability is not necessary but if you have studied the language it will help you. Anyways.. good luck and keep your head up!
Gotta go now but may respond with more later ; )
