Make flash cards of new words you want to learn; make as many as you think you can learn in a week, and go over them frequently. Watch or listen to news broadcasts and read a daily newspaper. Go to the store and look for items for which you don't know the English name, and look at the label on the items.

If you know the basics (yes, no, hello goodbye, the numbers, names of places you have to go, etc.) you'll pick it up from listening. What language do you speak originally? Maybe you can find some online resources to get a better grasp.

Try to learn the basics, thank you, your welcome, hi/hello, bye/good bye, i am, you, me, and try to talk english out side, and syour native language only when you are at home.
Also, if you live in nyc, I know some programs that teach you english for free.

Spend time with English-speaking people, and try to "think" only in English. That's how I learned another language.

The ULTIMATE way to learn a language, especially English (many of the Mexican and Russian immigrants here have agreed) is to be IN THE COUNTRY, with no choice but to speak it. You'll pick up on the enunciation, body language, etc., faster and more efficiently this way, and believe me, you won't forget it. ;-)
