Buying DVDs from movies you like most. Watch the movie with captions in your own language, than after in the english language, than without captions. Try to repeat the dialogs, and so on.

Hangout with people who enjoy your company. Volunteer at the Red Cross or at a hospital.
Carry 4x6 note cards and write down 20 new words a day. Study your cards while you're on the bus or subway or waiting in line at the bank.By the way, it's "vocabulary" and "pronunciation".

Watching television and listening to radio (talk shows, not music) would help with pronounciation, especially subtle pronunciations which are distinctly American, yet hard to express in writing. As for vocabulary, I would say reading is key. Read novels, essays and scholarly journals of increasing complexity and varying subjects.

I heard there's this trick, you try to use words that don't start with "s". It sounds easy, but if you try, the letter "s" comes up a lot. For example......asinine instead of stupid.
