Why does it seem like Hispanics are refusing to learn English?
Are Hispanics, specifically illegal immigrants, refusing to learn English?
I mean, why the need for all the mexican-music radio stations and bi-lingual packaging.
So are they learning English?
If not, why?
Is it just illegal immigrants that aren't doing it?
(my ancestors learned English when they immigrated to this country, as did millions of other people, so I don't see how today is any different...you can bet that they didn't do multilingual packaging in Russian back then!) I was asking a simple question...*not* trying to be racist or 'stuck up'.

Re: Why does it seem like Hispanics are refusing to learn English?
Regarding Your Question.....
"Why does it seem like Hispanics are refusing to learn English?"
I'm Hispanic and came here (legally) when I was 8 years old in 1989. I speak both Spanish and English. However, when I meet a Spanish speaking person I always prefer to speak Spanish since it is my native toungue, no matter where I might be. To others, they might think I don't speak English but I really do. I just speak it when I need or have to. I think that is the reason why you probably hear a lot of Spanish been spoken especially in places where Hispanics tend to live in close communities such as Miami, New York, etc.
Regarding Your Question..................
"Are Hispanics, specifically illegal immigrants, refusing to learn English?
Illegal immigrants are the new comers to this country and just as any non English speaking wave of new comers to this country, they don't speak English. Some are trying to learn it but you can't expect them to learn it overnight. Others, unlike most other immigrants from other countries that come here to start a new life, comform to not learn it because they are really just trying to earn enough money to return to their country, which in most cases such as Mexico, is in very close proximity to the United States, and help their families fight out of poverty.
Regarding Your Question..........
"Why the need for all the Mexican Music radio stations and bilingual pack...."
Do not feel bad. Take a trip to any other country and you are likely to find English Music radio stations. To answer your question however, Hispanics have nationalities that are in close proximity to the United States and also compose the majority of the minorities in this country.
Regarding Your Comment..........
"My ancestors learned English......................"
Today is not yesterday. Travel back in time to the time your ancestors came you would probably hear English speaking people talking bad about your relatives because they did not speak English the 1st year they were hear. A lot of Hispanics, especially illegal immigrants, have only been hear a few years. To add, multilingual Russian packages didn't exist because the Russian population was almost insignificant comparing to Hispanics now.
Hope this helps you understand the subject better.

I don't know - I sure hope they plan on learning English since they moved into an English speaking country - that is our national language.

Re: Why does it seem like Hispanics are refusing to learn English?
Not all illegal aliens are Mexicans and not all Mexicans don't only speak Spanish. I actually live in a city where the majority of the people are Asian and don't speak any English. But im not angry about it, I'm actually used to being around diverse people who have a hard time communicating. That's what America originated from, immigrants. Also, it's not that easy to learn English when you have other things to worry about. Most immigrants come to this country with very little money, their first priority is surviving and providing for their family not accommodating others.

I don't believe they are actually refusing to learn English. Is the lack of time. Most immigrants not just Hispanics come here for the opportunities there is here in the U.S. Yes I know people who would love to learn English and go to classes to learn it. But most immigrants can't because they are out working to support their family.

Re: Why does it seem like Hispanics are refusing to learn English?
Because they don't have to! We make it so easy for them to communicate in their native language because we're trying to be so politically correct. Everything is in Spanish and English. For crying out loud, everything asks what language you want it in. My dad came here in the 1970's from an Asian country and there was nothing here in his native language and he was forced to learn English to survive. They offer the citizenship test and the driver's license test in Spanish. Plus the US doesn't have a national language. That's a whole another issue.
