I am from a place where there are a lot of Cantonese(also Mandarin and different China dialects) and Spanish speaking people. But I noticed a lot of people who are not bilingual are learning Spanish more often than Cantonese. Which would you rather learn?

not only spanish is largely used but it is also sexier unlike cantonese where it sounds so harsh and noisy.

i would rather learn spanish because we already have the whole country of mexico living in the U.S.!

and besides, i'd want to learn spanish so that the next time i ever go to a 7-11 and some mexican says some dirty comment as i pass by, i can understand what he's sayin and slap him across the face.

I would like to learn Cantonese, but that would be hard. A lot of my friends speak Spanish.

Cantonese never crossed my mind. I would like to learn Japanese though.

I would learn Spanish. It is more readily used and even though there are also many different dialects within the Spanish speaking community, you can still communicate across them with some measure of success.

i think that Spanish is more common so learn Spanish!

probably Spanish because its like the second most spoken language in our country and i would think employers would be more likely to higher someone who is bilingual.

I have learned Spanish and am glad I did. But if you can read and write chinese or any other language that does not use standard english letters (farsi - Iranian; arabic, russian, etc.), you wil have a skill that is highly prized in business and government and much rarer among US citizens than Spanish.

Chinese is probably the most spoken language in the world and it is likely to be the world's next #1 superpower. People will be wanting to speak Chinese.

I have family members who speak and read arabic and they are stunned at the jobs in US government and military that are open to them.
